Liberty Baptist Church:
Nonprofit Utility Bill Audit
Overview
Liberty Baptist Church’s Hampton Campus is among the largest worship facilities in Virginia. The 277,000-square-foot church was updated and expanded in 2011, welcoming over 4,000 members each Sunday.
Keeping a facility of that size comfortable is a significant and costly undertaking. After the expansion added to their energy footprint, Justin Greene, Liberty’s Executive Director of Administration, reached out to Utility Management Services (UMS) to audit their utility accounts and identify opportunities to lower their electric bills.
Using UMS’s proprietary software RateMaster, analysts evaluated Liberty Baptist’s billing history and projected annual costs under every eligible rate and pricing combination. The goal: find the most cost-effective option without requiring any operational changes or equipment upgrades.
The analysis revealed a clear opportunity. UMS determined that Liberty Baptist could reduce its energy costs by over 20% by negotiating a new Power Purchase Contract on their behalf. UMS handled the negotiation and execution directly with the power provider — Liberty Baptist’s team didn’t have to lift a finger.
The result: $205,000 in savings, with no operational changes and no equipment installed.
"Our members trust me to spend every penny wisely. UMS has the technical expertise needed to help us save thousands of dollars, and we appreciate it."
